That new black magic

The Blackout turned into The Shootout. And once the University of Louisville's offense finally rediscovered its ammunition, the power in Big East Conference football had shifted.
Flick off West Virginia's neon sign and put U of L's name in bright lights. The No. 5 Cardinals' 44-34 victory over the No. 3 Mountaineers last night before a record crowd of 43,217 at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium should register as the biggest in school history. It also might provide the spark that lands the program in the BCS national title game.
I hope everyone is thinking that Louisville is for real this year," center Eric Wood said. "We are going to be a national contender for a while to come."
A championship this year is now a realistic possibility because the Cardinals (8-0, 3-0 Big East) went back to their roots as a high-scoring, quick-strike offense.
West Virginia's attack was just as electric, gobbling up 318 rushing yards and 540 total yards. But when it mattered most, when the Mountaineers (7-1, 2-1) threatened another miracle comeback, the U of L offense surged forward.
Last season in Morgantown, the Cards blew a 24-7 lead by not scoring in the fourth quarter. They lost 46-44 in triple overtime.
Last night, after clinging to a 30-21 lead after three quarters, they tacked on two more touchdowns to hold on.
"It was our time to shine," said running back Kolby Smith, who had 73 yards on 13 carries. "We remembered that feeling from last year, and we just wanted to keep scoring no matter if it was a field goal or a touchdown. We just wanted it."
At times in the recent past, U of L would grow more conservative with late leads. That wasn't the way to go against the Mountaineers.
"We tried to be as aggressive as we've ever been because we knew how explosive they were," coach Bobby Petrino said.
He trusted much of his game plan to the recovering thumb of Brian Brohm, and the junior quarterback responded with his best effort this year. Playing his third game since thumb ligament surgery, he completed 19 of 26 passes for 354 yards and a touchdown and continually exploited the West Virginia secondary for deep balls.
The Cards started four drives with long pass plays, all of which Brohm completed for at least 22 yards. He hit Mario Urrutia for a 7-yard score on the first play of the fourth quarter for a 37-21 advantage.
After West Virginia answered with six, Brohm and Urrutia hooked up for two long pass plays on the Cards' next series. That set up Anthony Allen's 5-yard TD run that made it 44-27 with 10:19 left.
He was awesome," Petrino said of Brohm. "You could see after the Syracuse game that he was very motivated, and he practiced at a different level the past two weeks."
U of L finished with 468 total yards. The teams' 1,008 combined yards broke the Big East record of 907 set by Virginia Tech and Syracuse in 2002.
The Louisville offense had suffered its own mild blackout in recent weeks, averaging just 25 points in its previous three games against major conference opponents. Early last night the wires seemed to be crossed again.
Though they penetrated the West Virginia 15-yard line on four of their five first-half possessions, the Cards came away with just one touchdown and three Art Carmody field goals for a 16-14 halftime lead. They had five cracks inside the 4 late in the half but settled for three points.
"We weren't getting frustrated, because we knew we were moving the ball well," Brohm said. "We wanted touchdowns, but we were putting points on the board."
Defense and special teams contributed touchdowns for U of L during a wild beginning to the second half.
West Virginia star running back Steve Slaton fumbled after a long run two plays into the half, but three plays later the Cardinals returned the favor when receiver Jimmy Riley lost the ball after catching a pass inside the West Virginia 15. It was the team's 12th turnover in the past five games.
But this mistake didn't hurt for long, because on the very next play Brandon Cox hit Slaton and forced another fumble. Linebacker Malik Jackson scooped this one up and returned it 13 yards for a TD and a 23-14 lead.
U of L's defense then stuffed West Virginia three times deep in its own territory, and Trent Guy returned a punt 40 yards for another score to make it 30-14.
When Slaton left the game with a wrist injury after his second fumble, it looked as if U of L had scored a knockout blow. But West Virginia still had its other superstar, Pat White.
The fleet-footed quarterback ran for 125 yards and four touchdowns and also threw for 222 yards. Slaton returned late in the game and finished with 156 rushing yards and a score.
Down 17 in the fourth quarter, the Mountaineers were in the same position as last season. But U of L, which has preached about finishing since January, put that into practice this time.
The defense stopped West Virginia on downs with seven minutes left. After White scored his last touchdown with 2:18 remaining, an onside kick rolled out of bounds, and the clock ran out on the Mountaineers' 14-game winning streak.
The Shootout at The Blackout had ended, and one new national power was left standing.
