YANTRA MAIN EVENT

Lush forests, open fields, clear ocean waters and
friendly faces were abundant at Salt Spring Centre during the past few
weeks. For those who have never been there, Salt Spring Island is off
the west coast of Canada, in beautiful British Columbia. The Centre is
a small community and the main event every year is the family yoga
retreat, with a children’s program so that parents can attend classes,
and their YTT program. Many new and old faces were there, and quite a
few current and former MMC residents.
Babaji
arrived in a helicopter that touched down in the hay field close to the
main building, a Victorian farm house. A group of about 30 greeted him
enthusiastically. The retreat was a huge success and included daily
arati, pranayama and meditation, asanas, kirtan and so forth. One of
the main highlights, as usual, were the gigantic blueberries at every
breakfast, and a not-so-simple soup. Jai Raj led a mantra yajna the
last day of the retreat which was very meaningful for all participants.
The kali yantra was decorated with dahlias and marigolds from the
Centre’s organic garden, which is also home to the Salt Spring Seed
Company.
Before the retreat
ended, Babaji and the Rock Crew had begun a new rock wall and road next
to the main house. During Gita class as Babaji answered questions, we
would hear the tremendous crashing of boulders as they tumbled out of a
dump truck and the noise of a tractor outside the window. The Rock Crew
grew to over 25 people. Over the course of four days, a six-foot wall,
50 yards long, materialized out of 80 tons of stone. The road was
widened into what Babaji named the Hanuman Highway. The energy was high
and filled with the spirit of community and karma yoga.
Despite
the ambitious Rrock Crew project and it being the busiest time of year
at the Salt Spring Centre, there was still plenty of time to sit, talk,
and drink a cup of chai on the lawn. Nearby were freshwater lakes for
swimming, rocky pristine beaches, hiking trails, and the one small
village on the island where we got gelato. The best part for us were
the friendly Canadians, who were generous and welcoming in every way.

Yantra - The Visual Mantra Effect

Forms of Yantra
Shree Yantra Shree Yantra - helps in clearing all the negative energies - standing in the way of Peace , Prosperity and Harmony and makes everything work for us in an orderly manner . The Shree Yantra is a symbolic form of all Gods and Goddesses. The Shree yantra was possessed by Brahma, the creator of the Universe and praised by Vishnu the lord of the Earth. Shree yantra is connected deeply with the Ancient Art of Vaastu and has been specifically mentioned in the `Vaastu Shastra`.
Maha Mritunjay Yantra -The use and upasana of Maha Mritunjay yantra is the worship of Lord Mahamritunjay Shiva and is most auspicious and bestows the person with wealth, health and happiness, good fortune and fame. The Maha Mritunjay yantra dispels all sort of fears, influence of evil planets, accidental death and serious illnesses etc.
Kuber Yantra - Enhancing wealth Yantra blesses the worshipper with wealth & prosperity. This yantra is attributed to wealth lord Kuber. This yantra is a very effective yantra for financial prosperity where all other methods and yantras do not bear fruits.

Yantra a Sanskrit word means ' an apparatus' it
is a mystic diagram composed of geometric and alphabetic
figures--usually etched on small plates of gold, silver or
copper. These are also made in three dimensions in stone or
metal.
The
purpose of a Yantra is to focus spiritual and
mental energies, to improve health, wealth, childbearing or the
invoking of one God or another. It is usually installed near or
under the temple Deity. The temple Yantra is a magnificent
three-dimensional edifice of light and sound in which the devas
work. On the astral plane, it is much larger than the temple
itself. It is made is such a way that the male and female energy
patterns of he universe interact and produce a high level
spiritual energy. It is one of the deepest secret of ancient
Hindus and many parts of the texts dealing with these diagrams
of energy are lost for mankind . Yantra has
also been defined as a visual mantra i.e., it is able to create
the vibrations and other mystic effects of a Mantra by sight.

The Yantra
provides a focal point that is a window into the absolute. When
the mind is concentrated on a single, simple object (in this
case a Yantra), the mental chatter ceases. Eventually, the
object is dropped when the mind can remain empty and silent
without help. In the most advanced phases, it is possible to
attain union with God by the geometric visualization of a Yantra.

The Yantra is
like a microcosmic picture of the MACROCOSM. It is a focusing
point and an outer and inner doorway. The Yantras are often
focused on a specific deity and so by tuning into the
different Yantras you can tap into certain deities or
creative force centers in the universe.

Yantras are
usually designed so that the eye is carried into the center, and
very often they are symmetrical. They can be drawn on paper,
wood, metal, or earth, or they can be three-dimensional.

The most celebrated
Yantra in India is the sri Yantra, the Yantra
of Tripura Sundari. It is a symbol of the entire cosmos
that serves to remind the practitioner of the nondifference
between subject and object.

The Power of Yantras
to induce RESONANCE is based on the
SPECIFIC FORM of its appearance. Such a diagram can be
composed from one or more geometrical shapes which combine into
a precise model representing and transfiguring in essence, at
the level of the physical universe, the subtle sphere of force
corresponding to the invoked deity. From this point of view we
can argue that the Yantra functions similarly to a
MANTRA (sacred word).

By RESONANCE, a certain energy
from the practitioner's MICROCOSM vibrates on the same
wavelength with the corresponding infinite energy present in the
MACROCOSM, energy which is represented in the physical plane by
the Yantra. The principle of RESONANCE with any deity, cosmic
power, aspect, phenomenon or energy owes its universal
applicability to the perfect correspondence existing between the
human being (seen as a true MICROCOSM) and the Creation as a
whole (MACROCOSM).

The science of yantra and mandala(Brain Metamorphosis)

Archetypes and the genius mind. Yoga and the mental personality. Pranayama and Balancing the brain.
The science of yantra and mandala
The scientists about whom I was talking, particularly those in Switzerland, have developed, in connection with the educational system, a science called yantra and mandala which of course most of you know about or have seen; but you have not tried to understand exactly what these things are. Many times you see geometrical figures known as Shree Yantra, Kali Yantra or Tara Yantra. We thought for some time, even in our own country which is the origin of this culture, that these yantras were a mystical substance. People did not understand them, hut now in order to improve the quality of understanding in terms of education, and with retarded children in particular, they are using yantras. And what do they tell you to do? To concentrate on the yantra with eyes open, then close the eyes and visualise the yantra as long as you can.

When you are not able to visualise with the eyes closed, then open the eyes again and gaze at the yantra. Go on practising this system of trataka, dhyana on the yantra, twice a day for ten to fifteen minutes. What will happen? They say that yantra has the capacity and power to penetrate far into the depths of the mind, that area of the mind I was talking about, and manifest or express that mind. Through this practice of yantra meditation, mentally retarded children are helped in the countries whose cultural tradition is not yoga, yet in this country where we have the tradition, we have completely forgotten what these funny geometrical things are.

The second thing they have been talking about is mandala. For us it is a scientific process of conceptualising the subconscious and unconscious areas of the mind. They even go to the extent of saying (you will be surprised) that concentration on those mandalas can finally stabilise the alpha, beta, theta and delta waves in the brain which have got voltage, frequency, ampere and vibration. It is like electricity. It you can reorganise, reset or restructure the brain wave patterns, then you can manifest a new quality of brain; a new quality of understanding.
Yoga and the mental personality
Later, thinkers began to ponder over the possibility of whether or not yoga could influence the activities of the brain and consciousness. Even now research is going on all over the world and the results which we have obtained so far very positively indicate that some of the other aspects of yoga, not necessarily asana, can alter the behaviour, chemistry and waves of the brain. I will try to tell you in layman's language so that you can carry home the knowledge. I am not concerned about your practice, that is left to you, but for me it is more important that I explain to you how far yoga has been understood by the thinking people of the world today; not necessarily by the Hindus or Muslims but even by agnostics who don't have any concept of God, reality, atma or afterlife etc., who just believe in matter - total matter, and nothing beyond matter. They have come to the conclusion that, through the practice of yoga, the quality of the contents of the brain can be changed, influenced, transformed or completely metamorphosed.

If that be so, how are we going to apply this science of yoga to our own profession, to our own career and our own station in life? We are sannyasins, some are businessmen, and you are students. Everyone has his own career and profession. It is possible therefore to apply this science of yoga in such a way that it will improve the quality of our performance, the quality of our experience, the general experiences we have everyday with the people we come across, including the experience in interaction with social and national problems. That mental personality should be developed through yoga. We believe it is possible, but how?
Archetypes and the genius mind
There is a general opinion now prevalent in Western countries, and certain circles in India as well, that through the practice of pranayama, dhyana, yoga nidra and antar mouna, the mind of students can be improved. In Switzerland, educationalists have been working on this and on the behaviour of archetypes in the brain. These archetypes are in billions and trillions in the brain and seem to become a barrier in expressing our mental personality. Many times you people feel that you understand things better, and sometimes you don't understand. At times you are experiencing total clarity whether you study geography, mathematics or history, and at times it seems everything is clouded and you don't understand. In this connection you will have to study the behaviour of that mechanism which is the seat of understanding, and this is the brain.

The archetypes in the brain come in the way of your expression. They are the substances which lie buried in the depths of the human mind, not the external mind which is connected with the senses, that is the eternalised mind. Through the eyes, ears and other mediums of perception, this mind obtains knowledge; I am not talking or that mind. That mind is just a reflector, but there are other areas of mind, of chitta, which you should be able to touch if you want to develop genius; if you want to be a student of outstanding success. You don't have to have much to do with this mind, particularly that part which depends on external sources of the senses, the indriyas; not even with that mind which depends on the storehouse or fund of knowledge which you have collected. There is an area of the mind which you do not know, which you have never experienced, which has to come out. That mind can only come out if you can fix the archetypes.
The pineal gland and a balanced personality
This is just a glimpse that I have presented before you out of thousands of researches that have been done the world over. In America, since they have introduced yoga into their drug-rehabilitation centres they have succeeded very well. I am not talking about the relationship between yoga and the mind. I am talking about the relationship between yoga and consciousness, between yoga and man's personality, his swabhava, prakriti or nature. It is true that yoga postures help everyone and you must practise quite a few of them every day (at least you must practise surya namaskara) but yoga does not end with that - with that yoga begins.
Not only sannyasins or grown-up people but every student must be exposed to the scientific aspect of yoga, which is not known to us in this particular generation but which scientists have come to learn about and which our ancestors knew. Thousands of years ago there was a tradition where a child at the age of seven or eight was ordained the sutra. Please do not think I am talking like a brahmin. I am talking like a doctor, remember it! I am talking of science and not trying to establish or prove a religious theory. This ordaining of the sutra was known as upanayanam when children were given mantra, pranayama and surya upasana.
And now what are scientists talking about? They are talking about a very important thing. At the age of seven or eight the pineal gland begins to degenerate in every child and the pituitary is unleashed. It is opened completely, and with its opening the hormones come into the body unchecked, and imbalances in the personality grow. A boy or girl of fifteen can think, can experience, can desire, can have the passion of a man of thirty-five. There is no balance because the pineal was not maintained in a healthy state when it began to degenerate at the age of seven or eight.

In order to maintain the health of this gland so that it may survive for as many years as possible, mantra, pranayama and surya upasana were introduced. I am not going to talk about mantra and surya upasana, I will just speak a few words about pranayama. How does it affect the pineal gland situated at the top of the spinal column in the medulla oblongata? In the religious theme it is known as the "Third Eye" of Lord Shiva. We call it ajna chakra, the monitoring centre from where the respiratory system, excretory system and all other systems in the body are given orders and monitored. Even paralysis, pineal paralysis, muscular atrophy and other diseases can be directly controlled by training the pineal, ajna chakra. Scientifically we call it the monitoring centre and that can be trained through pranayama.
Pranayama and Balancing the brain
Breathe in through the left nostril; breaths out through the right, breathe in through the right; breathe out through the left - a simple thing. And just control the breath for one second, two, three, four, five. We have seen in our scientific studies that when we breathe in through the left nostril the right hemisphere of the brain is acting - contracting and expanding, contracting and expanding, contracting and expanding. When you breathe through the right nostril, the left hemisphere acts. In this way you are training a very important part of your body - the brain and pineal gland. In the days when pranayama was taught it was with the view that our children would have this pineal gland maintained in a healthy condition for many years so that they would have a balanced personality; a balance between emotion, thinking and experience.

So, I did not talk to you on yogasana and exercise because I thought many of you know about them. I wanted to give you this information because I am involved in scientific research into yoga. I still believe that just as you can improve the quality of everything, you can improve the quality of the brain also - it is possible. The brain is not static substance and if you are an idiot, it does not mean that you have to remain an idiot, or that if you have a bad memory you should always have a bad memory and nothing can be improved. In this particular context I ask you to think about yoga but kindly remember that perhaps the only place in India that gives you this explanation about yoga is the Bihar School of Yoga.

HOW TO CELEBRATE TO MAHA DIWALI

photo

photoDeepawali
is the combination of two Sanskrit words. Deep meaning light and Awali meaning
rows. When they merge we get one word Deepawali meaning rows of lights. It was
from then on that the words Diwali and Deepawali became synonymous.

Diwali the Hindu festival of lights is celebrated with the
performance of Lakshme Pooja(worship unto the Goddess of light, wealth, and
prosperity) and at night time, thousands of earthen lamps called Deeyas are lit
to dispell darkness. The festival honors the Hindu goddess Laksmi, the goddess of
fortune, good luck, riches and generosity. She will visit every home during the
festival. Diwali also celebrates the triumph of good over evil.

The date of this holiday varies each year according to the Hindu
calendar. It is held on the 14th day of the dark half of Aashwayuja to the 2nd
day of the bright half of Kaartik, which falls in October or November in the
Gregorian calendar. The celebration comes just as the monsoon season ends and
the weather is calm and mild.

Diwali celebrated after the return of Lord Rama from exile
was universal in nature. It is said that Lord Rama returned home on Diwali night
after fourteen years of exile in the forest. The city of Ayodhya appeared to be a
garden of light during that night as everyone went out to meet and greet Him in
the traditionally ceremonial manner. As the inhabitants came out of their homes
with their lighted deeyas to greet Lord Rama,it created a spectacle with rows of
lights as far as the eyes could see. This gave birth to the word
Deepawali,meaning rows of lights.

The story about Diwali which regards to the origins of Diwali.

This the day on which Lord Krishna destroyed Narakasur. The victory
of Lord Krishna over the evil demon, Naraksura is the triumph of good over evil
and therefore the day is celebrated enthusiastically.

In the Adi Parva of the Mahabarat(one of the great Hindu epics),
the Pandavas(a class of noble men) returned from the forest during Diwali
time.Once more, the celebrations extended beyond the boundaries of India to
wherever Hindus lived.

All of these reasons contribute to the universal celebration of
Diwali as it is today, be it in India or any other country where Hindus reside.

The 5 days of Diwali.....

Diwali the festival of lights is observed in the month of
Kartik(October-November) on the night of the New Moon. This night happens to be
the darkest night of the year. This festival of Diwali is a 5 day celebration
with Diwali day being the most important of the five days.Weeks before these
five days, Hindus observe fasting, they clean themselves, their homes and its
surroundings in preparation for Lakshme Pooja(worshiping of the Goddess of
light, wealth and prosperity).

The first day of Diwali.....

The first day of Diwali is called Dhanvantari Triodasi or
Dhanwantari Triodasi also called Dhan Theras. It is in fact the thirteenth lunar
day of Krishna Paksh (the dark forthnight) of the month of Kartik. On this day,
Lord Dhanvantri came out of the ocean with Ayurvedic medicine (medicine which
promotes healthy long life) for mankind.

This day marks the beginning of Diwali celebrations. On this day
at sunset,Hindus should bathe and offer a lighted deeya with Prasad (sweets
offered at worship time) to Yama Raj (the Lord of Death) and pray for protection
from untimely death.

This offering should be made near a Tulsie tree(the Holy Basil) or
any other sacred tree that one might have in their yard. If there is no sacred
tree, a clean place in the front yard will suffice.

On this day,Pandits, Sadhoos, and Hindus in general, perform
Hawan(a fire ritual) and Jap(the chanting of special Mantras or prayers) for
good health and strenght during the forthcoming year.

The second day of Diwali.....

This day the houses are cleaned and fresh flowers are placed all around to adorn
the home. A rangoli is drawn at the entrance of the home. Rangoli's are
intricate designs drawn with a mixture of rice flour and water. They are created
for all special occasion but during Diwali they are filled in with bright
colors. At night, brilliant firework displays take place sometimes lasting for
hours. Cites by rivers float little boats with lighted candles on the water.A
dipa is placed on every windowsill and on the steps of outside stairways.

The third day of Diwali.....Diwali itself.....

This is the day when worship unto Mother Lakshme is performed
throughout India. The day of anticipation has finally arrived. Traditionally the
day starts with an oil bath. New clothes are worn and the doorways are sprinkled
with clean water. This day of the festival includes a breakfast that has
different dishes.

Prayers are said either at the temple or at home. Friends and
families visit each other and partake of various sweets.

Hindus themselves and join with their families and their Pandit
(priest) worship the divine Goddess Lakshmi,Lord Kuber And Lord Bharaiva to
achieve the blessings of wealth and prosperity, the triumph of good over evil
and light over darkness.

This phenomenon of good over evil has attracted peoples from the
many races and they all join with the Hindu community in celebrating Diwali, the
festival of lights.

And above all.....

On this day Mother Lakshmi emerged from the ocean of milk
called the Ksheer Sagar. She brought with Her wealth and prosperity for
mankind. On that day,Lakshme Pooja was performed to honour Her and as such, every
year on Diwali day, Hindus perform Her prayer and worship. In northern part of
India, on Diwali day, Hindus invite the Pandit (a Hindu priest) to their home
and they perform Lakshme Pooja in grand style. The making and distribution of
various sweets and total vegetarian foods are the order of the day. They give
charity to the poor and gifts to the Brahmins (the priestly class of
people). This practice is alive and well to this very day.

The fourth day of Diwali.....

On this day, Goverdhan Pooja is performed. Many thousands of years
ago, Lord Krishna caused the people of Vraja to perform Goverdhan Pooja. From
then on, every year Hindus worship Goverdhan to honour that first Pooja done by
the people of Vraja.

Itis written in the Ramayan (a text recording the exploits of Lord
Rama), that when the bridge was being built by the Vanar army,Hanuman (a divine
loyal servant of Lord Rama possesing enormous strength) was bringing a mountain
as material to help with the construction of the bridge. The call was given that
enough materials was already obtained.Hanuman placed the mountain down before He
could have reached the construction site.Due to lack of time,He could not have
returned the mountain to its original place.

The diety presiding over this mountain spoke to Hanuman asking of
His reason for leaving the mountain there.Hanuman replied that the mountain
should remain there until the age of Dwapar when Shree Rama (Lord Rama)
incarnates as Lord Krishna in the form of man. He, Lord Krishna will shower His
grace on the mountain and will instruct that the mountain be worshiped not only
in that age but but in ages to come. This diety whom Hanuman spoke to was none
other than Goverdhan (an incarnation of Lord Krishna),who manifested Himself in
the form of the mountain.

To fulfill this decree, Goverdhan Pooja was performed and is
continued to be performed today.

The fifth day of Diwali.....

The second day of the bright forthnight (Shukla Paksh) of Kartik
is called Bhratri Dooj. This is the day after Goverdhan Pooja is performed and
normally two days after Diwali day.

It is a day dedicated to sisters. We have heard about Raksha
Bandhan (brothers day). Well this is sisters day.

Many moons ago,in the Vedic era,Yama(Yamraj, the Lord of death) visited His
sister Yamuna on this day.He gave his sister a Vardhan(a boon) that whosoever
visits her on this day shall be liberated from all sins. They will achieve
Moksha or final emancipation.

From then on, brothers visit their sisters on this day to enquire
of their welfare.

This day marks the end of the five days of Diwali celebrations.
