the Yantra God
The Meaning of the Yantra Integral Yoga® is a complete Yoga, and the Integral Yoga yantra is also complete. It is a representation of the entire cosmos.
Sometimes external images are used in meditation or worship to symbolize or express certain divine ideas and qualities. When mantras (sound formulas used in meditation) or divine ideas are meditated upon, certain images are brought out. It is something like liquid crystallizing into solid form. These geometric figures are actually crystallized mantra forms. A yantra is a physical expression of a mantra - a mantra being a Divine aspect in the form of sound vibration - yantra in the form of a geometrical figure.
In simple language, as I said before, our Integral Yoga yantra represents the entire creation. Each part of the yantra corresponds to a different aspect of the cosmos. According to yogic thinking, God or the Cosmic Consciousness, is originally unmanifest - just by Himself or Herself or Itself. As God begins to manifest, the first expression is as the sound vibration. The Bible explains it by saying, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." Here "word" means sound.
In Sanskrit they say something similar but take it a step further. "Nada, bindhu, kalaa" - the sound, then the dot, then the art or rays. If God manifests as sound, you can't see anything. What is the smallest expression which you could see? The bindhu or dot. It should be the smallest possible particle. But, of course, if it is that small we can't see it, so in the yantra it is shown as a large dot in the very center. The bindhu represents the first physical expression, the very core of the cosmos. It is that dot which then expresses as kalaa. Kalaa means the different aspects or literally the different rays or different arts.
The next expressions are the three rings of different hues surrounding the bindhu. They represent the three gunas or basic qualities of nature: sattva (balance, rajas (activity) and tamas (inertia). In the yogic thinking, everything in this universe manifests uniquely because it results from a unique combination of these three. All differences in the phenomenal world are due to the variations of these three basic qualities.
Then you see the hexagon around the three rings. This can be very well explained with an example from science. If you take a photograph of a crystal, you will see that its normal shape is six-sided. That's why the yantra has the six triangles around the center. It means that the first speck of matter expresses itself as more complex matter like a crystal.
The six triangles are actually a combination of two larger triangles, one pointed down, the other up. As one triangle passes through the other, we get this six-sided figure. The triangle with apex upward represents the positive, or masculine aspect; the inverted triangle is the negative, or feminine, aspect. In Sanskrit this concept is called Siva-Shakti. It is a combination of the male and female, equally represented. There is no inferiority or superiority for either aspect; they blend perfectly together. Whichever way you turn the yantra, they remain the same. So it makes a complete whole, and this itself represents the entire nirguna (unmanifest) as well as saguna (manifest) aspects of the Supreme.
Once the triangles come together, the hexagon could then represent something else also: the six basic Tattvas or principles - the five senses and the mind as the sixth. The six-sided crystal then manifests outward in further expansions of the primordial energy and matter. Why and how does this happen? Out of love. So all the beautiful lotus petals represent the loving manifestation.
Another way of explaining the petals is that the eight inner petals represent the subtle elements, while the sixteen outer ones indicate their grosser manifestations.
Then you see the three large circles surrounding the lotuses. They indicate how these elements further express as the three worlds: causal, astral and physical. But even that is not the end. The Divine expression is unlimited. That is why the circles are framed by a square with gaps pointing outward, representing the infinity of creation.

THE MAGIC TRIANGLE OF DURGA YANTRA
This is the magic triangle of the Indian goddess Durga. It is a yantra (magical diagram) that appears on numerous postacrds, gilded prints, and posters of the goddess, usually positioned beneath the feet of her vehicle, a lion or tiger. It is also worn in India in the form of a metal amulet. The example shown here comes from a poster depicting the multi-armed, weapon-bearing Durga riding a tiger in a flowery field; i scanned it and eliminated the tiger's claws and a few flowers to make the background cleaner, but other than that, i did not change any part of it. The little squiggles in the triangle are numbers, but for many years, i did not know which numbers they were.
In May, 1999, working on the theory that, like most magic squares, the design utilizes only sequential numbers (in this case from 1 through 9) with three of the numbers doing double-duty in two rows of sums, my partner nagasiva decided to "solve" the Durga triangle as if it were a mathematical puzzle. He worked out four different solutions, each of which can be rotated along three axes, to produce a total of 12 different arrays. One array is shown here, in which the numbers in each leg totals to 17. As it turned out, this was NOT the array that the actual numbers represented, but it is still a legitimate solution to the "puzzle."
In a side-note, it should be mentioned that our consultation with the classic text "Magic Squares and Cubes" by W. S. Andrews et al (Open Court Publishing Co., 1917, reprinted by Dover Publications, 1960) reveals quite a few magic squares with religious import from India and Asia, but NO magic triangles of any kind, although the book contains many magic pentagrams, hexagrams, and spheres. Furthermore, Andrews has no examples of "crossword puzzle" style magic diagrams such as this one, that is, arrays in which some numbers are counted twice, due to the "acrostic" nature of the row layouts. So, all in all, the Durga magic triangle is as interesting mathematically as it is religiously.
Meanwhile, Seth Melchert, writing in the sacred landscape e-list, identified the symbol in the center of my Durga triangle as the Sanskrit word "Shreem" (alternatively spelled "Sreem" or "Shrim"), which means "power." Sri is the name of an ancient Vedic goddess who bestowed kingship or rulership upon people and deities. In post-Vedic times the kingship-bestowing goddess Sri became fused with the luck-bestowing goddess Laksmi, under the name Sri-Laksmi, an Indian equivalent to the Roman goddess Fortuna or the Irish-American character Lady Luck. Sri-Laksmi, however, is no longer iconographically associated with this magic triangle; it is now the distinct emblem of Durga. Thus the word "Sreem" in the center of the magic triangle probably refers to the "power" of Durga, a goddess who is conceived by some of her devotees as the supreme Mother and Godhead and by other worshippers as Sakti, the consort and "energy" of Lord Siva, the supreme Godhead.
Eventually, after this web page had been online for a while, a knowledgeable person came along who told us the actual numbers used in the Durga triangle. His name is "gsmith" and not only did he give me permission to copy his very pretty red-and-white images of the Durga Triangle, he translated the numbers as they actually appear in the diagram. In this "official" array, each leg's numbers total to 20. Says gsmith, "In India you can get little copper plates and medalions with this symbol. Their meaning goes beyond simple 'luck.' The symbol Shreem which you have in your triangle is not uniformly present in all representations. Some have Hreem, others have Om. These are all bija (pronounced beej) [seed] mantras. Shreem is the sound representation of Lakshmi, the goddess of fortune. Hreem is the sound representation of Maya, the Matrix of the universe. Om is the primordial sound of Brahman."
Another helper, named "Laylah," prvided references to a book by L. R. Chawdhri called "Practicals of Yantras" (Sagar Publications, New Delhi, 1994) in which the name for the Durga triangle is given as "Shri Durga Navaran Beesi Yantra" and its purpose is said to be "to bestow wealth, good health, and victory over enemies." The making of a yantra is a religious act and in this case it is to be accompanied by puja (worship) consisting of reciting the mantra (magical chant) "Aim Hrom Klom Chamundaye Vichche" 108 times daily. In drawing the triagle, one is instructed to start with the outer lines, then draw inner ones, and finally fill in the numbers from the lowest to the highest, while reciting the bija mantra "Sreem."
Mangal in Hindu Religion
YANTRA SPELLS
In Vedic astrology Mars is known as Mangal, Angaraka and Kuja. These names in Sanskrit mean, "auspicious," "burning coal," and "the fair one," respectively . Mars is a malefic. He rules over the two sidereal signs of Aries and Scorpio. He is exalted in Capricorn and fallen in the opposite sign of Cancer. Mars is often depicted as a god with a red body exemplifying the natural color of the astronomical body in the sky. Kuja is a karaka, or indicator, of brother and siblings, assertion, aggressiveness, soldiers and military endeavors, mechanical ability, engineers and surgeons, commanders and rulers, accidents, violence and war, ambition, strength, arguments and conflict, passion and desire.
Like Surya, the Sun, Mars' most powerful position is in the 10th House. He is a particularly beneficial planet for Cancer or Leo Ascendants. His nature is"pitta," or fiery. His gem is red coral and his direction is south. Mars' day is Tuesday and he reaches full maturity at age 28.
In Vedic mythology Mars appears to have been born of the Earth. Sarva, the archer, represents the element of Earth as the supporter of life. Sarva's wife Vikesi, the disheveled, is the Earth goddess. The Puranic literature of ancient India declares that Angaraka is their son born of the Earth. Mars is further identified with the Kartikeya, the god of war. He is the son of the god Shiva, who was born without Shiva's union with a woman. Kartikeya was born with six heads as the six goddesses of the lunar constellation, Kritika, or the Pleiades, nurtured him. Kartikeya kills the seemingly invincible demon Taraka, and releases the Devas from Taraka's oppression. These myths depict valor, strength and courage, and most fittingly, the protective quality of Mars. Thus, Mars is known as the protector of dharma, the sacred path and purpose in life that each of us follows.
In the Zodiac, Angaraka is regarded as a god of martial character, red in every aspect. Even the Romans held Mars as their Guru. In the Zodiac, ee is the Lord of "Mesha" and "Vrischika." He stays 1 1/2 months in each Rasi taking 18 months to complete the cycle. A prayer to this planet frees one from debts, poverty and illness afflicting the skin. This graha bestows property and conveyance (locomotion). A prayer to Angaraka can restore loss of eyesight. Tuesdays are intended for the worship of Angaraka who loves the chanting of Sama Veda. If one observes the fast on Tuesday for 21 times, the unlucky influence of Tuesday (Mangal) can be got rid of. The legend that depicts the influence of the worship of Mangal goes as follows, and is narrated whenever a worship or offering is made to the deity:
An old woman used to observe fast on every Tuesday. Her son was named Mangaliya. The deity Mangal, in the disguise of a Brahmin, came and said to her, "I am hungry. I shall prepare my own food, but you must plaster the ground with cow-dung."
The woman said, "Today is a Tuesday; I do not plaster cow-dung on this day. I shall sprinkle water and you can preparethe food."
The Brahmin said, "I shall only cook on a cow-dung plastered surface."
The woman refused and said that she could do anything else except cow-dung plaster."
The Brahmin said, "Let your son lie upside down, I shall cook on his back."
After some thought, the woman agreed to this and called her son. The disguised Mangal lit the furnace on the son's back and cooked food. After cooking, the Brahmin asked the woman to call her son so that he could take the auspicious food. The woman, in grief, asked why he made jokes, for after cooking on her son's back, he must have died. The Brahmin insisted that she call to her son. She did so, and the son came running.
The Brahmin said, "Old woman, your fast is successful. With kindness, your mind is also full of devotion and faith. May you be ever happy." Then Mangal in disguise disappeared.
The Mangal Yantra A Yantra is an instrument, a talisman, or a mystical diagram usually in copper. It is a technique or path, considered the simplest and shortest, through which one can attain one's desires, and fulfill one's wishes. It is said that the Deities reside in the yantras and by performing "Puja," or worship of Yantras, one can appease them, remove the malefic effects of planets, and increase the flow of positive influences.
The Mangal Yantra brings luck in business and good health. It is very powerful and gives quick results. This Yantra spells general well-being, good fortune, and prosperity for the whole family. It also frees the person from debts, offers protection from accidents, cures diseases and anger, and ensures quick recovery from surgery and illness. In the case of any grave problem or severe disease, the Yantra should be worshipped daily for quick relief. It ensures cosmic blessings of the Deities. This Yantra is also used where there is delayed marriage because of position of mars in the chart.
Shri Mangal Yantra is worshipped by keeping fast for 21 Tuesdays continuously according to rituals. Men and women who are deprived of marriage even up to 30 to 40 years due to certain obstacles, or from whom married life is full of miseries and difficulties, bickering, or threatened seperation or divorce, should worship Mangal Yantra toward off the above evils.
When Mars is malefic or one is of rash temperament, Mangal Yantra is extremely useful. It overcomes one's enemies, and gives protection from the effects of poisonous articles. Mangal Yantra shall be kept on Teursdays of the rising moon. Mangal Yantra removes evil effects of Mars such as injury, accident, et cetera. Those who are suffering from high blood pressure and those whose Mars is placed in the First, Fourth , Seventh, or Tenth Houses shall keep this Yantra at their homes or with themselves to ward off the evil effects of planet Mars on them.
Also, the Mangal Yantra works remarkably in case of abortions and the denial of children; when one remains in debt and is not capable of repayment inspite of honest intentions, rather debt increases, making the life hell; all these difficulties can be overcomed by the worship of Mangal Yantra.
Shri Mangal Yantra helps the worshiper to overcome the above difficulties, and one succeeds in all his efforts to gain desires and lead a comfortalbe life. Mangal Yantra is made on copper with gold polish.

A song of praise to Angaraka composed by Muthuswamy Dikshita
I take refuge in Angaraka, who is like the divine Mandara tree to his humble devotees; who is the presiding deity of Tuesday, and the son of earth.
Who is the Lord of the cherished Mesha and Vrischika (the signs of the Zodiac, Aries & Scorpio); who has a reddish glow, wears a red dress and bears a sword and a trident; the auspicious one, with a beautiful neck, with lovely feet, the bestower of blessings, who rides on a goat, and whose highest apogee is the Makara Rasi (Capricorn).
He who is worshipped by gods and demons alike; has a beaming and smiling face; bestower of wealth of lands and brotherhood, possessed of red eyes, protector of the afflicted, worshipped in the temple of Vaidyanatha; favoured by the three groups of divine teachers such as Divyaugha, Siddhauga and Manavaugha in the Srichakra worship and Guruguha; who is the friend of Surya (Sun), Chandra (Moon) and Brhaspati (Jupiter); who shines with his good wife, his hands resting on his knees, possessed of four arms, and extraordinary in many ways. www.dhyansanjivani.org
The Making of a Holi-Yantra
Apart from throwing them at each other, Holi colours also have other beautiful uses. In Hardwar - Utteranchal, a special Holi ceremony was recorded this year, actually originating from the region of Bareilly - Uttar Pradesh. Family members created a beautiful yantra pattern with the Holi colours upon which the cowdung firetower is placed. The animated recording (364 kB) may take a while to download, but the waiting is worthwile he work starts with a border and a Ganesh-yantra in the middle. Several Swistika symbols are used also, of course only the form that turns clockwise (sunwise) and represents the energy of creation. The Swastika that was used by the nazi's is turning against the sun and represents destruction. Finally chains of cowdung-"pearls" are put on top of it, with some paper inside and some paper sticks for lighting. The cowdung itself is also decorated with Holi colours. All that happened in the evening of the 28th of March. On the next morning, the men of the house go out towards the river Ganga where a huge Holi-bonfire has been burning. They make 7 rounds of the fire, lighting some large reed sticks and bringing some embers back to the house. With these the cowdung pile on the yantra is set afire. Now it is the turn of the women of the house to start the seven rounds around that fire. After that Holi sweets are distributed and Holi colours are thrown at each other. Then the men of the house visit friends and neighbours to celebrate Holi further in likewise fashion, suffering on the way from colour-attacks by the local youth. Meanwhile the women of the house entertain similar visitors coming from other houses. www.dhyansanjivani.org
The Right Mantra for Your Type
Ancient Vedic texts explain that everything is made of sound; sound, or vibration, is the purest form of energy, and sound can certainly move us profoundly. A “mantra” (which means “instrument of the mind“) is a sound made up of sacred Sanskrit syllables that helps us to harness spiritual energy. Chanting or reciting a mantra can give us access to our creative spirit and bring harmony to our minds and bodies, creating wellness and vitality. Simple Solution:Many of us recite mantras to still our minds and become more peaceful, but the ancient Hindu system of Ayurveda can tell you which mantra is perfect for you. First, take the fun quiz to find out if you are an airy Vata, a fiery Pitta, or an earthy Kapha. Then see which mantra will help achieve your deepest purpose.Find out your dosha, or basic type, by taking The Dosha Quiz. If you are a Vata, your mantra is Ram (pronounced “Rahm”). Its purpose is to help boost your immune system and alleviate fear and anxiety. If you are a Pitta, your mantra is Shrim (pronounced “Shreem”). Its purpose is to promote general health and harmony. If you are a Kapha, your mantra is Hum (pronounced “Hoom”). Its purpose is clearing and stimulating. www.dhyansanjivani.org

Sri Yantra - A Tantric Meditation
From the Hindu tantric tradition comes the Sri Yantra, or “great object.” Sri Karunamayi (also known as one of the enlightened Ammas) has said that one needs nothing more than to meditate on this image to become enlightened. Its nine interlocking triangles form a powerful symbol for meditation. The proportions of the largest triangle are the same as each face on the Great Pyramid at Giza in Egypt. The dimensions of that pyramid conform to the divine proportion of the Phi ratio. Simple Solution:Use this Sri Yantra as an ordered space within which to find the peace you require. The rings of lotus petals and the surrounding square with four doors represent boundaries within which consciousness resides. By your intention move into the symbol and experience time as a place of stillness in the eternal now. Breathe deeply as you focus your attention on the simplicity of each triangle, moving from the largest to the smallest at the center and then from the smallest to the largest and back into your daily life. May peace surround you. www.dhyansanjivani.org

Modern fractal, ancient yantra
Indian yantras
Mandel fractal
Fractals occur all the time in nature..seeming to give nothingness a pattern.
Cascade Fractal
Ancient yantras. Modern Fractals ?
Fractals move towards infinity in a way mind has difficult conceiving: James Gleick.
Fractal geometry is beloved of art hobbyists who toy with Sierspinkski triangle, Julia set, Koch snowflake. You will find thousands of sites dedicated to this infinity-in-finite art. Fractals are also being used to unknot some knotty problem of the latest science of chaos theory. Fractals are also used to explain stock market curves, weather patterns and all those problems left unanswered by the stolid Euclidean geometry. But long before all this, spiritual and scientific India had used fractals to explain that classic vedic truth: yathe pindande tathe Brahmanande. This translates to mean `as in the microcosm so in the macrocosm’, again a line somehow credited to western philosophy or science. Yantra was the original infinite-in-the-finite art.
Even today, transcribing yantra means using heavily loaded psychic language shrouded with tantric meanings. But even without understanding all this, it is possible, just by gazing at the yantras, to experience little switches getting flipped on in your mind. The effect is tangential, inexplicable. Yantras, like fractals, use geometric figures like circle which means wholeness or completeness, square meaning stolidity or earth element, triangles whose meaning varies according to whether they are upward facing (masculine/fire element), downward facing (female/water element) or spun together (to mean the consummation of the male-female elements).Founder of Bihar School of Yoga Swami Satyananda Saraswati in his book Sure Ways of Self-Realisation observes that yantras does not function with conscious awareness, or psychological process. It works neither through faith, mind or belief. “It is like the bullet fired from a rifle, whether you believe it or not, it is going to act upon you.”
The qualities of a fractal (and yantra) are that the inner patterns are self-similar. From nature, a fern would be the best example. When cut, its smaller part is similar to the larger one. It is iterative. This means the pattern repeats itself, as in a fractal or yantra set, to infinity. But the most important one is what gives them their name – the fractional dimension of these parts, which means some of these patterns do not fit in neatly with the old-fashioned geometry (Euclid’s) as we learnt them at school. This gives them a dimension beyond the understood ones. This, in yantra, is what helped intuition access the difficult concepts of shoonyata (or quantum nothingness) as maya or play of the universe. World was not what appeared to be. What was solid was all empty. James Gleick, best-selling author of Chaos, says `fractals flow toward infinity in a way that the mind has trouble conceiving.’ In the same book, he writes, when ice crystals form ` a complex shape arises out of a featureless void’. This displays, according to him, `the delicate balance between order and chaos.’ It just so happens that our ancients used a slightly different language and a different symbolism, calling the order Shakti and the chaos as Shiva. But no doubt, both are speaking the same language about the secret of the infinite in the finite.
THE WORLD OF MANDALAS.YANTRA AND CREATIVE VISUALISATION
In the tradition of classical yoga originating from India, lies a pathway of self-enlightenment, growth and inner peace. Within this pathway are tools to enhance our concentration, contemplation and creativity. Welcome to the world of Creative Visualisation, Yantra Yoga and Mandalas.
A brief look at the path of Yantra
As Mantra uses sound through chanting, Yantra uses sight and form through the construction of geometrical shapes. Triangles, squares and circles are used to form a picture, design or object, or can be used as a focal point for inner visualisation. Used in this way, it can be an aid to discovering and understanding the self through the creative construction of the entire structure. Although originally Yantra were constructed in wood, cloth, sand etc. today we have the use of unlimited materials, texture and of course our limitless imagination.
The Yantra pictured here is the Sri-Yantra (blessed device). Composed of nine linked triangles, creating 43 small triangles. The principle of this Yantra is to represent the balance of the masculine and feminine principles. |

A brief look at the Mandala
The creation of purely geometrical designs are called Yantra, the more complicated colourful and elaborated designs, which included concentric circles frequently within a large square are called Mandalas. Mandala means 'circle' in Hindu language and is viewed as a sacred symbol representing wholeness. If we think of the rose windows seen in Christian churches, the sand Mandalas drawn by the Navaho Indians, even the shape of an opened flower and our planet, the circle takes it place as an important symbol in our universe.
|
|
Carl Jung (the famous psychologist) studying man and his symbols, expressed 'I realized more and more clearly the mandala is the centre: it is the expression of all life: it is the path of individuation'.
Through constructing and colouring a mandala, people tend to integrate whatever is lacking from the whole and from perfection (Dalke 2001). Therefore when interacting with the mandala through its creation people tend to integrate whatever they need to learn or experience. Mandalas can be created with this benefit in mind, and have been integrated into treatment and therapy. The mandala can also be created for the love of drawing, colouring, painting, and the freedom of the creative process (although equally beneficial).
The mandala can be also be used to focus the mind in meditation, concentration allowing us to go within. Focusing on the mandala and holding the image in the minds eye cannot only increase the benefits, it can act as a tool to bring the mind to a calm, still point leading to concentration and meditation.

A brief look at Creative Visualisation
Before we can meditate, we must first learn and practise the art of withdrawing our senses from the outside world and developing our concentration to keep our focus within. When we meditate we can keep our focus on a symbol, phrase or Mantra, or focus on a candle or object. Another way to meditate is to be taken or led by a (qualified) teacher on a guided journey. This journey allows us to experience what will help us to learn, grow and develop. It may be that a journey of tranquillity is necessary to calm and still a busy, cluttered mind, visualising the calm and gentle flow of a stream or the feeling or relaxation in the countryside. To promote healing, visualising the healing rays of the sun entering the body through the breath, regenerating and revitalising each cell in the body and calming the mind, is a beneficial practice.
When we sleep the body relaxes. The mind does not. Think of the vivid and often colourful dreams, images and journeys, which can be remembered on awakening. Concentration, withdrawing the senses and meditation can all provide the mind with the relaxation, rejuvenation and rest that it needs.
Through the process of creative visualisation we can be taken to parts of ourselves that need to be healed or acknowledged, experience another place of still and calm and to reinforce this feeling in our everyday life. The creative process is the limitless choice and possibility to experience, learn and grow. The benefits are immense.
N.B. Although the construction of Mandalas can be done for pure enjoyment, the teaching, study and practise of Yantra Yoga, meditation and creative visualisation should always be under the strict guidance and instruction of a qualified yoga or meditation teacher.
